Hope you will like it and give your comments and suggestions. Reading this book is worth it if only for the character sketches Berton provides, for he is not the sort to leave an interesting story out of the mix, and evidently there were many interesting stories — and probably many more lost in the flames, snow, or mud. Despite the difference in genre, reading Burton's account of the Gold Rush in the North is every bit as entertaining as reading Farley Mowat or Jack London. With a breadth and depth matched by no other one volume biography of George Washington, this crisply paced narrative carries the reader through his adventurous early years, his heroic exploits with the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, his presiding over the Constitutional Convention, and his magnificent performance as America's first president. The newspapers spread the news: the ship had carried a million dollars in gold Reprinted in with the help of original edition published long back [].

Berton had a talent for making History come alive in a way that is rare not only among Canadian authors, but indeed is rarely equaled and certainly not surpassed by any other author I have encountered abroad. Reprinted in with the help of original edition published long back []. A preface by series editor Terrence Cole and index accompany the original text and photographs. With that unrelated anecdote in mind, this book is fantastic and a joy to read.

This new edition of his memoir, published in commemoration of the gold rush centennial as the fifth volume in the University of Alaska Press's Classic Reprint Series, brings back his remarkable eyewitness account of the Klondike stampede. Add to Cart Buy Now Alaska and the Klondike gold fields : containing a full account of the discovery of gold, enormous deposits of the precious metal, routes traversed by miners, how to find gold, camp life at Klondike : practical instructions for fortune seekers, etc. It covers everything, including the parts that are not so pretty. Portraying the dangers, hardships, and privations of a gold-seeker's life; with a faithful description of life and scenes in gold mines and camps. A keen observer of human nature, Haskell's witty comments on conditions in the Yukon Valley are delightful reading.

Gold Fields Of the Klondike and The Wonders Of Alaska

Berton was one of Canada's best writers, and this is definitely one of his finest books. It covers everything, including the parts that are not so pretty. People the world over went mad! Fortunes were made and lost by some of the most eccentric characters you'll ever find in print.

As a Canadian living away from home, I never miss an opportunity to read a book by Pierre Berton. We expect that you will understand our compulsion in these books.

The pure storytelling with which Berton imbues his history of the gold rush is enthralling. Reading this book is worth it if only for the character sketches Berton provides, for he is not the sort to leave an interesting story out of the mix, and evidently there were many interesting stories — and probably many more lost in the flames, snow, or mud.

In this groundbreaking work, based on massive research, Chernow shatters forever the stereotype of George Washington as a stolid, unemotional figure and brings to vivid life a dashing, passionate man of fiery opinions and many moods.

In the end, while it's sickening to read about the thousands of horses who died on hopeless journeys It is a good introduction to Berton, to the Canadian North, the history of the Yukon, and a good primer before you launch into the other great books of Berton if you have never read him before!

We found this book important for the readers who want to know more about our old treasure in old look so we brought it back to the shelves.
